Three couples rent a luxury cabin in the woods for a weekend getaway to die for in this chilling locked-room thriller

What could be more restful, more restorative, than a weekend getaway with family and friends? Hannah’s loving and generous tech-mogul brother found the listing for the secluded dream house online. It’s his birthday gift to Hannah and includes their spouses and another couple. The six friends need this trip with good food, good company and lots of R & R, far from the chatter and pressures of modern life.

But the idyllic weekend is about to turn into a nightmare. A deadly storm is brewing. The rental host seems just a little too present. The personal chef reveals that their beautiful house has a spine-tingling history. And the friends have their own complicated past, with secrets that run blood deep. How well does Hannah know her brother, her own husband? Can she trust her best friend? And who is the new boyfriend, crashing their party? Meanwhile, someone is determined to ruin the weekend, looking to exact a payback for deeds long buried. Who is the stranger among them?

Review:

‘Today, she was going to help her husband to find some serenity. At least for the weekend.’

Three top name authors have weighed in on Lisa Unger’s twentieth release, offering this betselling author their praise. I have read only four previous Lisa Unger books, but after seeing Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six do the rounds on Instagram, I was intrigued. A locked room mystery with a unique topic focus, I found Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six to be a slippery slope style read.

A much-needed winter getaway for three couples in a remote forest location turns sour in Lisa Unger’s latest release, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six. In this picturesque but isolated cabin in the woods, a group of family and friends indulge in a luxurious escape. Hannah is the lucky recipient of this birthday gift from her brother, sharing it with her friends. Excited about the prospect of a lazy weekend indulging in plenty of good food and company, this holiday group are keen to see if the cabin matches its gold star rating. But soon this highly anticipated weekend takes a terrible and unexpected turn. A storm strikes the area, wreaking havoc with the travel plans of the guests. The owner/host of the cabins also raises suspicion from the group. Then the chef of this holiday retreat makes a shock revelation about the dark past of the stunning cabin site. Things come to head when personal secrets are aired, which leads Hannah to question everything and everyone around her. It dawns on Hannah that someone is watching and is looking to ruin her weekend escape. Who is seeking retribution and why?

Locked room mystery novels set in secluded locations are my weakness. I took one look at the cover of Lisa Unger’s Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six and I just knew I had to get my hands on it. Longing for a winter escape as we swelter here in the thick of our summer season, Lisa Unger’s new novel seemed like the perfect antidote. I enjoyed this chilly jaunt with the master of suspense.

Taking a captivating double storyline direction, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is a novel that you won’t want to put down. I found I was consumed by the plot featuring Henry, an orphan. I made all sorts of suppositions and theories around Henry’s link to the cabin party. Initially, it appears as though these two narratives are completely disconnected, but eventually Unger ties both threads together in spectacular circumstances. I was itching to get back to Henry’s story wherever I could, which surprised me as I initially was attracted to this novel based on the cabin element. Although I was satisfied with the suspenseful events in this area of the novel, I found the characters to be largely unlikeable. I actually didn’t care if they were stranded or in danger! Luckily, Henry’s journey pulled me right into the thick of this one.

Unger raises some interesting themes around family, identity, ancestry and DNA in Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six. I think this alternative slant on a classic thriller really captured my attention and made me think hard about our origins. The past, privacy and donors come into play in this fascinating Lisa Unger novel. I appreciated the lengths that Unger went to research wise to bring this topical novel to life. Readers will find that this book is thought provoking, unsettling and morally interesting. The quick tone and pacing style also ensures that the pages turn themselves. Thanks to a number of twists, shocking reveals, plot dupes and red herrings, Lisa Unger’s twentieth novel left me gasping for breath by the end!

A tale with two consuming and speculative tiers, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is another jamboree style thriller from suspense extraordinaire Lisa Unger.
